LFOD Radio 3.30.21 – Nipsey Hussle Tribute

Nipsey Hussle LFOD Radio 3.30.21
RIP Nipsey Hussle 8/15/85 – 3/31/19

Not much to add that isn’t expressed in the mix… Nipsey Hussle was a one-of-one & an inspiration to millions. He shared his blueprint for success with us as he crossed goals off his bucket list with every release. From Slauson to the world, he dreamed big and lived his visions.

Every mixtape offered a new feel as he grew as an artist and person. And for what felt like forever, he kept telling us “Victory Lap coming soon”. In the meantime, we got Crenshaw, Mailbox Money, Slauson Boy 2… His mixtape catalogue is one of the strongest out.

He also introduced the Proud 2 Pay model, selling 1,000 copies of Crenshaw for $100 a piece and then 100 copies of Mailbox Money for $1,000. Or you could log on to DatPiff.com. Up to you.

When Victory Lap finally came, it truly felt like one. I’m just glad he was around to take it. Just over a year later, he was murdered outside his now-famous Marathon clothing store.

These are some of our favorites from his decade plus run of music, highlighting the different flavors he offered along the way.

Artists! Hit us up.

And if you’re curious about having more success with submissions in general, we just dropped a video breaking down the science. Follow those tips and you’ll do well.

A Conversation with Doe Cigapom

DC native Doe Cigapom talks gogo, hip-hop, gentrification, education, & more

Pre-COVID flow right here. Last year started with an LFOD road trip & Sam traveling from city to city meeting artists that ya’ll recommended. The homie TonyWhiteDDM strongly recommended we link with Doe Cigapom while in Atlanta.

Though he resides in Decatur now, Doe’s story is that of life in the District of Columbia, Chocolate City, Washington, DC… He played drums in gogo bands growing up, experienced the extreme changes his city has gone through over the years, and found solace as an educator and MC.

We got into all of that and more in this convo. Watch the video above, catch some bars below & connect with Doe Ciga on Instagram for more.

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts as well. Comment below, on IG, Twitter, or send us an e-mail. Whatever’s clever.

Straight submissions this week! Shoutout to all the artists sending us records. We never quite know what we’re gonna get. This week ya’ll were feeling the melodies. Maybe next mix we’ll hit ’em with the bars? I know there’s a few artists on our radar that are rapping rapping.

DJ Manipulator #LFODMix (3.16.21)

It’s a pleasure to welcome DJ Manipulator to the stage: We first met at Nightworks a few years back where he was a resident DJ. Of course, his reputation preceded him. However, if you are not familiar, trust you’re about to be. And if you are, then you know what’s next.

This is maybe the most relaxing mix we’ve had yet – It’s mostly instrumental, with original production and some gems from the crates. Some of the records he pulled aren’t even in the database we report spins on to keep in compliance with the FCC… If you like what you hear, be sure to let him know. You can also catch him spinning on The Just Records Podcast & his newest album, Gram Jams III is out now on bandcamp.

DJ Manipulator is our fourth guest already this year – If you missed Candy Raine, DJ STIX, or Jeff 2Timez, you can run their mixes back right here along with quite a few others.

The Notorious B.I.G Tribute (3.9.21)

Rest in Peace to Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, Frank White, Big Poppa… Not many have made such an impact on Hip-Hop in such a short amount of time. He was signed to Bad Boy in 1993 and murdered in 1997. While he was here, he rapped his ass off. A menacing figure on wax, he also showed his sense of humor and charisma that won him the love of so many.

There’s a lot of different ways you can go with a B.I.G. mix. We chose to focus on the MC tonight. Whether blazing solo or going toe to toe with the heavyweights of his era (and the next), there’s no question that you’re listening to one of the best to ever do it.

DJ Candy Raine #LFODMix (3.3.21)

LFOD Radio DJ Candy Raine 3.2.21

Now this mix is about to be different than anything you’ve heard on LFOD Radio before. We’re joined by DJ Candy Raine, who gets downright nasty for the full hour. Not only that, but she manages to include 50+ artists in the soiree.

We’ve known Candy since the early days, whether she was winning Hoop-Hop chips, DJing at The Workout, or making moves with Code Eclectic. A few years ago she moved to Atlanta, where she’s actively DJing and also a part of the CareFreeBlackGirl movement & The Playbook ATL Show. You can also catch her on Spark FM every Tuesday & Wednesday from 3-5pm. She does a lot! And we’ll be dropping an interview with more about that soon, but right now it’s time to press play on her latest mix.

And Artists! We’re spinning straight submissions next week, so hit us with some heat!!

Interview with The Record Co

Matt & Maria from The Record Co share their vision & update us on the new space!

The Record Co is a Boston-based community space for musicians, featuring four brand new recording studios, 15 rehearsal spaces, and all the bells and whistles you’d expect from such a location.

They were mid-renovation when COVID hit, so they made sure to include a top-notch HVAC system, as well. Each room has it’s own totally independent airflow. We talked more about safety and a LOT more about the music they’re ready to make in today’s interview.

These guys have a great mission, an exciting vision for the future, and they get things done! Definitely tap in when you can.

Long time listeners may recognize the name… Season VI of the LFOD Radio podcast was recorded at their Newbury St. location last year and we spoke at length with Jesse about their Beast compilation when that dropped in 2017.

Our Top Shares of 2020

Cakeswagg

Cakeswagg has been lit all 2020, dropping bars every Tuesday for her fans. Tap-in.

We’ve been sharing more music than ever this year. We’re on the radio every week dropping new mixes, we tapped in with artists across the country for Season VI of the LFOD Radio podcast, and we launched our submissions form to make it easy for ya’ll to send us your art. When we say ya’ll, we mean artists, fans, and everyone in between. It’s been dope connecting with so many different people this year.

When we hear/see something, we say something! We do most of our sharing on Twitter and Facebook where we can post links, but there’s some gems on our Instagram as well.

We looked back through the analytics and put together this list of our audience’s favorites from January through November 2020. Some of these may be brand new to you, others could be welcome reminders… It’s been a wild year – not easy to keep track of all that’s happened.

Let us know what you think! And if you’ve got something you’d like us to share, we’re here for it!

And now the music… No particular order.

Caliph – Jog Your Memory/Melanin

Alex Place popped up in one of our IG Lives with his laptop and brought this one to our attention. Dope video. Caliph did his thing on the new SuperSmashBroz record as well.

K.A.A.N. – The Escape

K.A.A.N. (Knowledge Above All Nonsense) popped onto our radar heavy this year. We shared a few of his videos, but this was your favorite!

Open Mike Eagle – I’m a JoeStar

Not gonna front like we knew what a JoeStar was before this hit our inbox, but a lot of ya’ll definitely did and we have a much better idea now. From Open Mike Eagle‘s Anime , Trauma, and Divorce.

Artistry & Activism

It’s hard to even put into words how we’re all feeling right now. We wanted to have that conversation, though. What does it mean to be an artist right now? What are our roles in pushing social change? What can we do and how do we make a difference?

Rilla Force, Lightfoot, Brandie Blaze, CakeSwagg, Dart Adams, Kadeem, and Pronzy talk about all these things and more in the above video. There is also a transcript below, if that medium is better for you.

This is only the beginning of the convo… Let us know if you’d like to be involved in future talks, other topics you’d like to hear discussed, or information we could help you find. And please share with anyone you think could benefit from viewing.

Be safe,

Sam
